“I have a tip that can take five strokes off anyone’s game,” Arnold Palmer once said. “It’s called an eraser.” You might smile and nod in agreement to Palmer’s tongue-in-cheek quip. Humor aside, every golfer would wholeheartedly agree to Gary Player’s statement: “A good golfer has the determination to win and the patience to wait for the breaks.” Part of patience is practice. Practice makes perfect. To be the best, one must play the best.
While you probably agree, you might not think the Midwest is the best. The best might mean practicing on a classic golf course, somewhere only a plane ride could take you. Perhaps you imagine swinging your clubs under a crystal clear sky on The Blue Monster in Florida or Pebble Beach in California.
You’re in luck! The world’s best golf courses are available in Naperville. Today, Tap in Pub invites you to join golfers around the world on the greatest golf courses in history, from The Blue Monster to Pebble Beach.
World’s Best Golf Courses (in Naperville)
First opened for play in 1919, Pebble Beach is now rated the No.1 Public Golf Course in America. Pebble Beach holds the record for hosting the most U.S. Opens and will proudly host the 2023 U.S. Women’s Open, among other future championships. Jack Nicklaus wrote: “If I had only one more round to play, I would choose to play it at Pebble Beach. I’ve loved this course from the first time I saw it. It’s possibly the best in the world.”
The nation’s first municipal golf course, Torrey Pines sits among the clouds. Overlooking the Pacific Ocean on the San Diego coast, the entire course is tucked among cliffs. Torrey Pines is historically known for the memorable 2008 U.S. Open.
Known as “Donald Ross’s Masterpiece,” the Pinehurst course is celebrated around the world as a uniquely complex challenge to any golfer. When Ross designed the course, he intended golfers to strategically make their way around the green, each shop proving to be a test of wit. Dubbed the “Michelangelo of golf,” Ross has left his name on many, memorable courses.
The Blue Monster
For 55 years, The Blue Monster hosted PGA TOUR events, home to a plethora of famous, world-class players. A total of 7,698 yards, The Blue Monster is truly a “monster,” full of deep bunkers, hazardous water, and – of course – hole 18. Ranked one of the Top 100 Holes in the World by GOLF Magazine, the 18th hole is truly infamous.
